LISA DEMAINE is a TV and Feature Film Director and a former 1st Assistant Director best known for her work on SEABISCUIT (director Gary Ross), I AM SAM (director Jessie Nelson) , and David Milch’s DEADWOOD for HBO. Her commercial credits include campaigns for clothing and retail giant, ESPRIT. (The Wellness Collection of 2012 and Wrap Yourself in Luxury of 2012) These seven spots were produced by HSI London and star Christy Turlington. Her directing credits also include the short film WAITING starring Richard Schiff, Earl Brown, and Izabella Miko. She has also directed a collection of 2nd units including Starz JOE AND MAX and Miramax’s THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU ARE DEAD and MI FAMILIA. She’s directed music videos (Universal Music) and webisodes (Ghosthouse Pictures) including the web series “Bobbington” starring Laura Breckenridge. Demaine also directed an interactive mural campaign for RED Camera utilizing very disruptive, cutting edge 3-D technology which will be displayed in 16K resolution.
Lisa’s short film, WAITING, has been very well received on the festival circuit garnering awards and attention nationwide and she quickly signed for representation with agent Dino Carlaftes of Kaplan Stahler.
Lisa’s body of work grew quickly moving from dozens of independent films to the highly regarded MI FAMILIA (directed by Gregory Nava) where she served as 1st AD and as 2nd Unit Director. She continued to gather more impressive film credits including Johnny Depp’s directorial debut on THE BRAVE (starring Johnny and Marlon Brando) finding herself as an invaluable part of Johnny’s creative team as the 1st AD. She directed 2nd unit for Gary Fleder’s THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU ARE DEAD. Demaine’s other feature 1st AD credits include SAVE THE LAST DANCE (directed by Thomas Carter), MIMIC (directed by Guillermo del Toro), SUPERSTAR, BASEKETBALL, and TV pilots CLUBHOUSE (directed by Gavin O’Connor), ASTRONAUTS (directed by Robert Harmon) and RELATED (directed by Mimi Leder) and many more.
She also directed 2nd Unit for Academy Award Director Steve James on his bio-period film for Starz titled JOE AND MAX. A film about the boxing legends Joe Louis and Max Schmelling and their decades long friendship. This film went on to win the ESPY Award for best Sports Movie. Steve James was so pleased with her direction of 2nd Unit, when the film began to fall behind schedule, he entrusted entire scenes with his stars to her skillful direction.
Lisa also served as the Associate Producer and 1st AD on New Line Cinema’s I AM SAM (starring Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Dakota Fanning).
Lisa is currently in development on the feature film BAD GUY starring Ray Liotta and Busta Rhymes, produced by Andrew Pfeffer. A sweet and tragic story of Richie and Leon, two low level criminals wanting out of a business destined to kill them. It is scheduled to begin production in summer of 2015.
Lisa grew up in a very small town in southwest Minnesota (population 300), studied Journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, worked as a segment producer and general assignment reporter for NBC-TV in Phoenix, AZ. Later, she moved to Los Angeles and was encouraged to study the craft of directing from the chair of the 1st Assistant Director. Lisa soon discovered she had a natural gift in the role of directing. Lisa resides in the Hollywood Hills with her husband and son.
